Portrait of Dr Gachet -
Painting by Vincent Van Gogh
"I've
done the portrait of M. Gachet with a melancholy expression, which
might well seem like a grimace to those who see it... Sad but gentle,
yet clear and intelligent, that is how many portraits ought to be done..."
Said Vincent Van Gogh in June 1890. There are two
authentic versions of this portrait, both executed in June 1890 during
the last months of Van Gogh's life ... This one is our favourite for
two reasons : First you can see it at Orsay Museum in Paris (The other
one is indeed the property of a private owner, which means it is hard
to admire) and the second reason is that this version is very colorful
in regard to the other - amazing deep blue and red tones. |
